Life Insurance Practice Questions: How to Use Them to Pass

Ask anyone who passed the life insurance exam what helped most, and you'll hear the same answer: practice questions. But there's a right way and a wrong way to use them — and the wrong way (answering hundreds of questions without reviewing anything) is surprisingly common.

Why questions beat chapters

The exam doesn't ask you to recite chapters; it asks you to apply concepts to short scenarios. Practice questions train exactly that skill. They also expose the gap between 'I recognize this' and 'I can answer this' — a gap that pure reading hides until exam day.

The 50/50 rule

Spend at least half your total study time on questions and review, not reading. A strong daily session looks like this: 15 minutes reading one topic, 15 minutes answering questions on that topic, 10 minutes reviewing every miss.

Review wrong answers like a detective

Every miss has a cause, and the cause tells you the fix. Misread the question? Practice slowing down on 'except' and 'NOT' stems. Didn't know the concept? Restudy that section before touching new material. Confused two similar terms? Add both to your confusables list and drill them together.

Never move on from a missed question until you can explain why the correct answer is correct — and why each wrong option is wrong. That second step is where most candidates leave points on the table.

  • Keep a running list of every question you miss, grouped by topic
  • Re-answer your missed questions 48 hours later — if you miss twice, restudy the chapter
  • Track your score by topic, not just overall, to find your weak areas

Quality over quantity

A thousand random questions won't help if they're not exam-style. Good practice questions are scenario-based, use the exam's vocabulary, and include explanations for every answer. Explanations are the gold — a question bank without them is just a quiz.
